The film shocked critics and the public during its screening at Sundance. Owen Gleiberman of Variety called it "devastating" and Daniel Fienberg of the Hollywood Reporter praised "complicated and heartbreaking".

"This is not a movie about Michael Jackson," director Dan Reed told Variety. "It's not a movie about Michael Jackson mistreating little boys. It's a film about two families and how two families accepted what their sons had revealed to them many years after Jackson's death. "

Jackson's estate has already criticized the film in a 10-page letter to the CEO of HBO. He denied the allegations and sentenced director Dan Reed for not speaking to family members or Jackson's legal team. Since the film's premiere, some Jackson fans have attacked the director and the two accusers.

"There is also this league of fans that is almost like a cult, and they say very nasty things [about the film] on social media, "Reed told Vice. "And their words echo the two-decade-long rhetoric of the Jackson family and its legal team, which shames the victims. This often happens in these cases. That's what they do very aggressively and relentlessly, and I do not think you can do anything in 2019 as in the past. "

Earlier this month, a pre-tour in Chicago of a forthcoming Broadway show based on Jackson's music was canceled due to the Actors' Equity Association strike, which allegedly resulted in delays. Equity rejected the fact that its "modest" demand was at the origin of the cancellation.

"The development lab planned for this production was delayed by 12 working days during the strike," said a spokesman. "It's hard to understand the impact of a modest delay in February on a course scheduled for late October."
