The National Insurance Commission (NIC), in a joint operation with the Ghana Police Service, arrested a Lebanese, Gabriel Medawar, for operating an unlicensed insurance brokerage company in violation of the Article 109 of the Insurance Law 2021 (Law 1061).

The illegal company operating under the trade name, Harmonia Insurance Group, operated from a private building near the West African Examination Council (WAEC) office in North Ridge, Accra.

NIC public relations director Mawuli Zobgenu told the Ghanaian news agency that Medawar was arrested along with two other accomplices who are believed to be his employees.

He said preliminary inquiries indicated the suspect was operating the illegal business long undetected until intelligence information led the NIC to tighten its buckle on him, which led to his arrest.

Other investigations have also revealed that some unsuspecting members of the general public, including well-known automakers, frequent their services.

Zobgenu said police are currently investigating the case with a view to bringing those responsible for such crimes to justice.

“When they are found guilty, the appropriate charges will be brought against them and their prosecution will begin in court.”

He cautioned the general public and legal persons to refrain from doing business with entities not recognized by law.

Mr. Oliver Bio, Deputy Managing Director (Legal) of NIC lamented the tacit connivance of some auto insurance companies “who should know better” and warned that these companies would be guilty of their business dealings with Gabriel Medawar, Harmonia Insurance Group, would be treated accordingly.
