The leadership of Alvan Ikoku’s Federal College of Education has confirmed the death of a senior lecturer, identified simply as Mr. Echetama, who collapsed and died in a conference hall on Tuesday.
The college’s acting public relations manager Joseph Okwulehi, who confirmed the death to reporters in his office on Wednesday, said the college principal was engrossed in a series of emergency meetings on the matter.
He said management advised the institution’s staff and students to be calm and wait for the institution’s official position on the matter.
“I can confirm to you that a lecturer collapsed in a classroom on Tuesday and was confirmed dead at the Federal Medical Center in Owerri,” he said.

NAN reports that Echetama, until his death, was a senior lecturer in the Department of Business Education.
Meanwhile, the development forced students to refrain from classes over an emerging rumor that the professor’s sudden death was linked to COVID-19.
Students were seen leaving the hostels on Wednesday, while others fled the school premises for fear of contracting the dreaded virus.
Some of the students, who spoke to NAN, said they decided to avoid the lectures when rumor emerged that the lecturer had died from a complication of the coronavirus.
A final year student at the institution, Frederick Anyawu, said the development had forced professors to suspend classes.
He said the students decided to stay away from the college until the issue was resolved.
Another student in the economics department, Okechukwu Eze, said the development caused skeletal activity in the institution.
