In 1996, Californians voted for the legalization of cannabis for medicinal purposes. But this kind of liberal attitude has not been well received by the White House. "We believe that legalization is a smokescreen – the real goal is to legalize all drugs," says Mayer of the Drug Enforcement Administration. Ed Rosenthal, a "legal" cannabis grower, quickly found himself at the center of a very "political" trial. Although state authorities have authorized the installation of this plant, the federal judge refused to let the jury hear his testimony. Many see it as a "political prisoner" and anger is spreading as people with terminal illnesses are denied this unique form of pain relief.
