The founder and leader of the Ghana Liberal Party, Kofi Akpaloo, called for the legalization of illegal substances, marijuana, known as "wee" in Ghana.

According to him, the legalization is necessary because it will contribute to boost the economy of the country.

"It's good on the drug market, it's good for hair creams, good for body creams. . . the United States that legalized it earns a lot of money, he said Peacefmonline.com in an interview.

Kofi Akpaloo argued, however, that marijuana has many medical benefits that could benefit the country if it were legalized.

"When you go to some western countries, [Marijuana] has been legalized for health purposes and we can do the same. If alcohol and cigarettes are legal in Ghana, why not marijuana? " he questioned.

He said that drug abuse could be controlled if the authorities sought to put in place structures and measures to prevent the drug from being consumed.

"Canada legalized marijuana in October 2018 and put in place measures to prevent people from abusing it. We can do the same thing here too, he said.

Mr Akpaloo badured that while he was elected to power in the 2020 elections, his government would do everything necessary to legalize the use of marijuana in Ghana.
