Nigerian Instagram comedian Debo Adebayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, shared his horrific experience after being arrested by Nigerian police on Saturday.
The comedian in a video shared via his Instagram Story on Sunday revealed that police officials threatened to kill them all if news of their arrest did not spread on social media.
He added that they were beaten and stripped as if they were criminals.
According to him, “the police told us that we were lucky not to have been arrested at night because they would have killed all of us and nothing will happen.
“First of all, I want to thank everyone for their efforts to ensure that we are all released safely.
“In all fairness, it was a horrible experience. I came out not because I am the only one with the courage to protest in Nigeria, but because I knew other people would be there as well and all we wanted was justice.
“At one point, I got scared because of the kind of comments made by the police officers who arrested us.
“I knew people would die. If we hadn’t talked about our arrest, they would have killed us all.
“After we stopped at the Lekki tollgate, we were taken to Adeniji Police Station where we were beaten and stripped.
“In fact, if the videos of our arrest weren’t already posted on social media, it would have been another day of mourning for the loss of innocent young Nigerians who came out peacefully.
“The police even told us that we are lucky the news is already everywhere because if it was night they would have shot us and nothing or no one will do anything.
“I am currently going to the hospital for tests because I have bruises all over my body from all the beatings I have received,” he said.
Recall that police officers deployed to Lekki Toll Gate arrested some protesters, including the popular Instagram comedian.
Lagos State Police Command spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi said in a statement on Saturday evening that the forty (40) suspects at Lekki Toll Gate Square had been arrested for conspiracy and violating COVID-protocols. 19.
According to him, the suspects gathered at the Lekki toll gate to provoke tensions, thus behaving in a way that breached the peace of the state.
However, Macaroni and the forty (40) other arrested EndSARS protesters were subsequently released on bail after police were dragged down by Nigerians for unlawfully dehumanizing unarmed protesters.
