«Ces facteurs de stress incluent l'homophobie et l'hétérobadisme, des expériences négatives vécues par les populations lesbienne, bibaduelle et gaie en raison de leur identité d'orientation baduelle et connues pour être liées à la santé.»
L’universitaire, de la faculté de médecine Norwich de l’Université d’East Anglia, a ajouté: «Nous avons constaté que les femmes qui s’identifient comme lesbiennes ou bibaduelles courent un risque accru d’avoir un excès de poids ou d’être obèses par rapport aux femmes hétérobaduelles».
Elle a dit que c'était "inquiétant" car le surpoids et l'obésité sont des facteurs de risque connus pour un certain nombre de maladies, notamment les maladies coronariennes, les accidents vasculaires cérébraux, le cancer et la mort prématurée.
"Inversement, les hommes gais et bibaduels sont plus susceptibles que les hommes hétérobaduels d'avoir un poids insuffisant, et il est de plus en plus évident que le poids insuffisant est également lié à un éventail de problèmes de santé, y compris un excès de décès", a déclaré le Dr Semlyen. "Nous avons également constaté que les hommes homobaduels sont nettement moins susceptibles que les hommes hétérobaduels d'avoir un excès de poids ou d'être obèses."
L'étude a montré qu'il existe une relation entre l'identité baduelle et l'IMC et que ce lien semble être différent pour les hommes et les femmes, a déclaré la chercheuse.
Elle a souligné que l'orientation baduelle n'avait été enregistrée dans les enquêtes sur la santé qu'en 2008 – ce qui signifie que jusqu'à récemment, il n'était pas possible de déterminer les inégalités en matière de santé touchant les personnes lesbiennes, gays et bibaduelles.
«Nous espérons que les décideurs et les cliniciens pourront utiliser ces nouvelles preuves pour fournir de meilleurs soins de santé ainsi que des conseils et des interventions sur mesure pour les personnes lesbiennes, gays et bibaduelles», a-t-elle déclaré.
Pour l’étude, les chercheurs ont regroupé les données de 12 enquêtes nationales sur la santé menées au Royaume-Uni auprès de 93 429 participants.
