Ms. Nana Frimpomaa Akosua Sarpong Kumankumah, President of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), tasked Ghanaian leaders to engage in nation-building in all areas where they find themselves.
She said that every leadership position held in the country has the potential to contribute to nation building, adding that “each of us should identify as a Nkrumah committed to nation building in our relationships “.
The PPC Chairman made the remarks on the sidelines of an event to commemorate the birthday of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana.
The theme of the event organized by the CPP was “Relevance of Nkrumahism to tackle today’s socio-economic challenges”.
Ms. Sarpong Kumankumah said the leaders must rekindle the spirit and zeal of selfless leadership towards the socio-economic development of the country.
She said the ideals of the former president dubbed “Nkrumahism” can only be materialized by the CPP, and not by any other political party, not even those who claim to be ideologically aligned with them.
She said they were determined to provide selfless leadership to address today’s challenges, especially economic challenges and youth unemployment.
The PPC Chairman reiterated that they were the only option to alleviate the socio-economic and development challenges of today, as they did in the first republic of Ghana, from 1960 to 1966.
Professor Joshua Alabi, a prominent member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), said he would support the CPP in elevating Nkrumah’s ideals.
He said the NDC recognizes the invaluable role played by the former president in the struggle for Ghana’s independence.
Prof Alabi said the PPC needs to reposition itself to remain relevant and be a force to be reckoned with in the country’s contemporary political space.
Mr. Bernard Mornah, former president of the National People’s Convention (PNC), said Nkrumahism was more relevant today than it was yesterday.
He said the current economic challenges underscore the need for the ideals of Nkrumahism to meet the national development needs of today.
The ideals of Nkrumahism include leadership of altruism, unity and unity, and patriotism.
