Let’s build the national cathedral together to glorify God, think about it – Bawumia to the Ghanaians

Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia urged Ghanaians of all faiths to voluntarily contribute to the construction of the National Cathedral.

Plans to build a national cathedral continue to generate heated debate, and although the government insists it will be privately funded and serve as a multi-purpose national building, some have expressed concerns about its utility and cost.

Speaking to the official city branch of Adabraka of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana on Sunday, August 22, 2021, Vice President Bawumia stressed the importance of the cathedral and urged everyone to help build it “for Ghana and for the glory of God “.

“As you all know, efforts are being made to build a national cathedral. It is very important that we build the cathedral. It is a voluntary exercise; anyone who wants to contribute can contribute. I have contributed, and I will contribute a little more. So I encourage everyone to think about it and build it. It’s not for anyone. It is for Ghana and for the glory of God ”, he underlined.

A voluntary national contribution for the construction of the cathedral would further consolidate Ghana’s position as a country of religious diversity living at peace with itself.

“Ghana is the second most peaceful country in Africa, with followers of many religions living and working together to build the nation. The construction of the cathedral would be another addition to our enviable record of peaceful coexistence, ”he said.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, accompanied by senior members of the clergy, laid the foundation stone for the cathedral on March 5, 2020 to mark the start of construction. A national cathedral secretariat has since been set up to raise funds from individuals and the private sector for its construction, while work continues at a steady pace.

The cathedral will house a series of impressive chapels, a baptistery, a 5,000-seat auditorium on two levels, a large central hall, a music school, a choir rehearsal, an art gallery, a shop and multipurpose spaces. It will also house Africa’s first Bible museum and documentation center dedicated to Christianity and nation-building in Ghana.

A new route and ceremonial landscape will link the cathedral site to Ghana’s main festive landmarks – Independence Square, Osu Cemetery, State House and Africa Unity Circle.
