Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia urged the chiefs and people of Gonjaland in the Savannah region to put aside any differences they may have and work together to accelerate the socio-economic development of the region.
Speaking at the 45th Annual Congress of the Gonjaland Youth Association, which brings together all young people in the region regardless of tribe or religion, in Bole on Saturday April 3, 2021, Vice President Bawumia stressed that in unity lies strength and the dream of a well-developed homeland can only be realized if all its citizens work together.
“Gonjaland can only develop if we all come together and work on it. Whether you are NPP, NDC, Gonja, Bimoba or any tribe: our land can only develop if we come together and work on it. Although I am Mamprugu, I consider myself a proud son of Gonjaland, and I will help do whatever is necessary to develop this land.
Dr Bawumia has assured government support for any development project, indicating that hundreds of projects have been undertaken in Gonjaland over the past four years.
“The government of President Akufo-Addo has undertaken over 630 projects over the past four years and will do even more to accelerate the development of Gonjaland and northern Ghana in general.
“A project that is particularly close to my heart and to the government is the reconstruction of the Daboya Bridge, I have spoken to the contractors, and barring any unforeseen challenges, I can assure you that the reconstruction work will begin this year.
“Gonjaland is endowed with abundant natural resources and tourist attractions,” he continued. “These assets position the region to take advantage of government policies for the accelerated development of Gonjaland.
“The government will give the Savannah area the necessary attention to stimulate local economic development. And I call on all the citizens of Gonjaland, wherever you are, to channel their resources to invest in the opportunities in the region. “
Vice President Bawumia congratulated the leadership of the Gonjaland Youth Association for their determination to launch a community agriculture initiative to create jobs for young people in the region, assuring that the project will receive support from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture as part of the plantation. for the Food and Jobs program.
The Vice President reminded citizens of the various threats to the development of Gonjaland, including conflict, climate change and illegal forestry and land activities.
“We must adopt sustainable agriculture and environmentally friendly practices if we are to contain the danger posed by climate change. Let me ask the Gonjaland Youth Association to start engaging farming communities and farmers on the dangers of bushfires destroying farmland and forest cover.
“We also need to stop illegal activities on land and forests. Illegal mining activities in Bole district and illegal logging and hunting in forest reserves in the savannah region threaten the lives of future generations.
“I am informed of the measures put in place by the new Minister of Lands and Natural Resources and deputy for the riding of Damongo, the Hon. Samuel A. Jinapor and the Savannah Regional Security Council must address these issues urgently. I urge you all to give them the cooperation they need to deal with these threats. “
Speaking on the Congress theme, “Beyond the 2020 Elections, Uniting Gonjaland for Accelerated Development,” Vice President Bawumia stressed, “The elections are over and now is the time to focus on the development of our people. Whether you are NPP, NDC, let us strive to work for the development of the country and Gonjaland. “
