Mr. Williams Aduum, Acting Municipal Executive (MCE) of the Kassena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region, called on stakeholders to help improve the quality of education and reverse the poor recent performance.

He said that despite the government’s huge investment in the education sector, the performance of schoolchildren in the region in recent years, especially in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), was falling.

In 2018, the municipality presented a total of 1,841 candidates, of which 925 were men and 916 women, but only 33.8% were successful.

In 2019, a total of 1,902 candidates were presented, including 919 men and 983 women, and of these, 53.9% were successful.

“In 2020, a total of 2,102 candidates were presented, comprised of 1,049 men and 1,053 women, and 44.1% were successful.

Addressing the first regular annual meeting of the Kassena-Nankana Municipal Assembly in Navrongo, Mr. Aduum said the Ghana Municipal Directorate of Education Service is concerned and has developed strategies to reverse the trend, especially at the grassroots level.

The outgoing MCE revealed that the Directorate of Education had implemented pragmatic measures to ensure that at the lower secondary level, teachers of subjects in which students performed poorly, below 50% at BECE, would be reassigned to different schools, regardless of location. or distance.

“At the primary level, teachers will have their performance measured throughout the year by the School Improvement Officer (SISO) and other scheduled officers from the principal who will then advise the principal at the end of the school year. the year with regard to the reclassification of teachers. he stated.

Mr Aduum urged teachers not to view reposting as a punishment but as part of efforts to reverse appalling student performance at the BECE level and urged all stakeholders, especially those in the education sector, to play their role effectively.

Regarding agriculture, Mr. Aduum noted that the Assembly in 2021 received 72,400 and 4,400 subsidized NPK fertilizers and urea respectively under Plantations for Food and Employment (PFJ), which were distributed to 6,239 farmers, including 4,511 men and 1,728 women in the municipality.

He said the Assembly also received 15 motorcycles under the Modernization of Agriculture in Ghana (MAG) to help provide extension services to farmers in the municipality.
