Miss Zeinab Mohammed Denderi, a 300-level student who had not been selected to win the contest, shocked the student body by beating four other candidates and won with a margin of 10 votes on the Nyankpala campus.

"The elected President of the CBC received a total of 761 votes, or 50.3% of the total valid votes, while the candidate received a total of 751 votes, or 49.7% of the total valid votes cast. . She won with a total of 10 votes. A frenzied jubilation has been announced on campus.

The election, which had been postponed following an injunction issued by a high court in Tamale, was later contested by Abubakari Abdul-Halim, candidate for the post of secretary general. He also challenged the credibility of the register of electors.

The University of Tamale Development Studies was established in 1992 as a multi-campus institution. It is the fifth public university to be established in Ghana. This derogates from the usual practice of having universities with central campuses and administrations.

It was created thinking of the three northern regions of northern Ghana. The four distinct campuses include Wa Campus in the Upper West area, Navrongo in the Upper East region, Nyankpala and Tamale in the Northern Region, but the government has announced plans to make them self-sufficient.
