OHe came the safety car, and Hamilton came for his one and only stop. Bottas was already on the brink and, with the slow pace of the field, Hamilton was able to find new tires to keep his lead.
The Englishman crossed the finish line with 25 seconds ahead of Bottas, surpbading two-time British world champion Jim Clark and Frenchman Alain Prost as an autonomous master of his home race.
"What a day, I like Silverstone," Hamilton said in his qualifying round. "I can not tell you how proud I am to be here today in front of my audience and my family," said Hamilton after his 80th career victory.
"One would think that we're getting used to something like that but it's like it's the first time."
A little earlier, Hamilton and Bottas had exchanged shots in a thrilling race. With Bottas maintaining his lead in pole position, Hamilton spent the first period tracking down his teammate. In the fourth round, the teammates crossed Brooklands, Luffield, then Copse, then Hamilton took the lead before Bottas came back. That's how it would stay until the Hamilton standstill.
