The Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) in Ghana has joined the calls of many institutions and individuals opposed to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) activities in Ghana.
The Church therefore called on the Parliament of Ghana to pass laws banning all forms of LGBTQI.
The SDA Church believes that the act, if accepted, will dehumanize the social well-being of Ghanaians and therefore wants all citizens to stand up to stop its introduction into society.
Speaking to reporters in Kumasi to outline the church’s position on the issue, the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s Northern Ghana Union mission chair, Dr Kwame Kwanin Boakye, said ‘There had to be a concerted effort to tackle LGBTQI activities in the country.
He said the government’s stance on the matter had brought some form of relief to traditional and religious leaders in the country who have vowed not to tolerate such activities in Ghana.
“On behalf of Seventh-day Adventists in Ghana and myself, we would like to congratulate and express our sincere thanks to the President of the Republic, President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo and to the government, for reaffirming that ‘Ghana don’t become gay ”. All other religious organizations and Nananom are delighted to hear that gays and lesbians are not part of Ghana and cannot be part of its citizens, ”he said.
There is growing opposition to LGBTI activities after police raided and closed their offices in the Greater Accra region.
Dr Kwanin Boakye added that the Bible forbids the act and that the Church will also continue to oppose homosexual practices and their relationships.
The church has pledged support for the government and other stakeholders to tackle gay activities.
