A Libyan militia has arrested a number of jihadist leaders linked to al Qaeda during a raid near the capital Tripoli, the group said.
The Misrata joint security force carried out a roundup against "wanted terrorists, clbadified among al-Qaeda leaders," Wednesday announced Wednesday the group linked to the Ministry of the Interior, recognized by the Government of the Government of the National Agreement.
The "dawn operation" in the suburbs of Tripoli "led on Wednesday to the arrest of people" related to attacks launched in the capital, "the paper said.
The main target, an Algerian national fighting under the name "Al-Chaoui", was arrested, along with several wanted Libyans, he added, without giving names or the total number of people arrested.
The force released a video of the raid, featuring images of three people wearing blue uniforms, hands tied.
He added that he also seized weapons, grenades, ammunition, documents and equipment used to produce explosives.
Libya has been plagued by chaos since a NATO-backed uprising overthrew and killed dictator Moammar Gaddafi in 2011.
Jihadists and human traffickers have benefited from unrest to settle in this country of North Africa.
Rival administrations and multiple militias are now fighting for power, with the Tripoli-based GNA holding West Libya at odds with a parallel administration based in the east of the country and backed by strongman Khalifa Haftar.
The so-called Libyan National Army of Haftar launched an offensive on April 4 to seize the capital, but its fighters faced stiff resistance from the GNA forces, including the powerful Misrata militia.
According to the World Health Organization, at least 1,000 people were killed in the Battle of Tripoli.
