Former President John Agyekum Kufuor called for licensing journalists to reduce disrespect for the profession.

According to Mr. Kufuor, the media has, in the past, trained good practitioners, hence the need to protect the sanctity of the profession.

He added that during his tenure as president, his government was not only committed to strengthening the media landscape, but also to strengthening democracy to enable the media to contribute immensely to the development of government policies.

The former Ghanaian leader made these comments at the launch of the 70th anniversary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Accra on Tuesday, May 28, 2019.

Mr. Kufuor pointed out that Ghana was the darkest days when the media was muzzled. He therefore congratulated President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for approving the right to information bill.

Mr. Kufuor also directed the GJA to ensure that its members are monitored frequently and protected from abuse.

Mr. Kufuor lamented the killing of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale who had worked with Tiger Eye PI until his death, calling the killing "regrettable".

The former president also urged journalists to be magnanimous enough to retract and apologize to people for whom they publish fake articles in the course of their duties.

He noted that: "The mistake is man and divine forgiveness", therefore, it will be disastrous for any journalist to refuse to retract and to apologize for a false report.

The GJA leadership awarded Mr. Kufuor the title of Champion of Democracy Champions.
