Light physical activity could keep the brain young and healthy: study

Washington: New research has shown that light physical activity during the day is badociated with greater brain volume and reduced brain aging.

The study was published in "JAMA Network Open".

Using data from the Framingham Heart Study, researchers found that for each additional hour spent in physical activity at a light intensity equivalent to about 1.1 year less brain aging.

According to the researchers, these results suggest that the threshold of badociation favorable to physical activity with aging of the brain could be lower.

"Each additional hour of physical activity of light intensity was badociated with higher brain volumes, even in people not meeting current guidelines for physical activity. These data are consistent with the notion that the potential benefits of physical activity on brain aging could increase to a lower level of intensity or volume, more feasible, "explained the main author, Nicole Spartano.

"We have just begun to discover the link between physical activity and brain health," she added.

Spartano emphasized the need to explore the impact of physical inactivity on brain aging in different racial, ethnic and socio-economic groups. She leads a team to study these trends at several sites across the country.

Extensive evidence suggests that regular physical activity can prevent cognitive decline and dementia. However, optimal specific activity levels for the prevention of dementia remained uncertain.

Active people have lower metabolic and vascular risk factors and these risk factors may explain their propensity for healthy brain aging.

The new 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans suggest that some physical activity is better than none, but it is recommended to practice more than 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity a week for substantial health benefits.
