Line of Duty star Martin Compston has offered a new two-series contract for the BBC's hit television series

Jed Mercurio, editor of Line of Duty, wants Martin Compston to accept a new contract for two series to play DS Steve Arnott because it is "crucial for future intrigues".

While the five series is poised to reach a climax, Mercurio hopes that Compston will commit beyond the scheduled sixth installment of the BBC's successful crime drama.

Mercurio wants to create more scenarios for Line of Duty and sees Compston as the "pillar" and "essential for future intrigues.

Speaking to the Sun, a source said that "behind the scenes, bosses secretly attempt to tie key members of the cast."

However, they continued to say that "everything is locked up".

It is believed that there is an "offer on the table" and with Compston, 34, "recognizing the magnitude of the series", it is hoped that he will sign on the dotted line.

The penultimate episode drew 8.3 million viewers last Sunday, the audience remaining outstanding, which will be the "H" curved copper.

AC-12 boss Ted Hastings (played by Adrian Dunbar) is the favorite of bookmakers, but most senior officers involved in Line of Duty are suspected.

Compston has played in all five Line of Duty series since debuting on BBC2 in 2012 and has also appeared on several other popular television shows, including Silent Witness and Victoria.

He also played the role of Lord Bothwell in the critically acclaimed film Mary Queen of Scots.
