The Lions declined Australia’s offer to host this summer’s series against South Africa.
A board meeting on Friday made the decision due to lack of financial certainty over funding for Rugby Australia to host the eight-game tour, which ends with a three-test run against the Springboks.
Four options remain under consideration, but each has significant drawbacks with a decision expected this month.
Continuing the original route to South Africa with small crowds or behind closed doors could still happen, while the financially risky possibility of hosting the tour in Britain and Ireland is also under consideration.
Postponing it until next year is the least likely course of action due to the ramifications of the original union summer tours, while the last option is cancellation.
The South African board of directors will meet next week with the likelihood of the world champions hosting the Lions behind closed doors accelerating.
