Elvis Costello closes 2020 with a new song saying goodbye to a tumultuous year. The new song is called “Farewell, OK 2020”, and it’s a catchy, hard-rock song in the vein of his new wave material from the late ’70s.

He opens the track with the line “Goodbye, OK / You’ll be on your way,” and his lyrics reflect the frustration and challenges that will likely sound familiar to most this year, like “I can’t go on after what you’ve done. And “I can’t get the stain off my hands since.” Listen to “Farewell, OK 2020” below.

“Farewell, OK 2020” is Costello’s first new song since releasing his 31st studio album, Hey Clockface, via Concord on October 30. The new album was partially recorded during the lockouts in New York, Paris and Helsinki, and features appearances by jazz guitarists Nels Cline and Bill Frisell, as well as longtime keyboardist Steve Nieve in Elvis’ band. Costello, The Attractions. One of his songs, “No Flag”, was also covered by Iggy Pop with lyrics in French. Hey Clockface follows its release in 2018, Look now.

In a statement about the album, Costello said, “I wanted the record to be alive, for the songs to require loud and jagged reading or intimate and beautiful.”

Costello also recently released Complete armed forces, a vinyl box set including his famous 1979 album Armed forces, as well as other pieces from the same period. The set includes three 12-inch LPs, three 10-inch LPs, three 7-inch singles, and a handful of comics that act as cover notes. The singer organized the shoot, which features a number of Costello’s best-known songs, including “Accidents Will Happen” and “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding.)
