Cameroon holds the Africa Cup of Nations
Hello, hello and welcome to this new day of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, which has so far proved to be a difficult battle for so – called big teams.
After the badbadination of Benin yesterday against Morocco, it is generally accepted that no team can be underestimated.
Today, there are two great games that should captivate the imagination of all. What many have dubbed "the final before the final" are two of the major powers, Nigeria and Cameroon, who will face for a quarterfinal place.
Nigeria and Cameroon also have eight trophies between them. Cameroon with five and Nigeria with three.
The stakes are high for a Cameroonian team that has not managed to obtain the essential goals and a Nigerian team that must make a firm statement after the defeat against the beginners, Madagascar.
Both sides were shaken by bonus streaks, the Cameroonians just before the tournament and Nigerians staged their event during the group stage.
The Super Eagles, however, are embarking on a clash after what some might call a rather embarrbading defeat against Madagascar.
Nigerian defender William Troost-Ekong insists that the defeat sent them back.
The Super Eagles won their first two games in Alexandria, but were surprisingly beaten to first place in Group B by the newcomers, Madagascar, after a bad performance in their last game.
"Everyone was unhappy with the last game against Madagascar, so I think everyone has that extra motivation. It's over or dead because we know we have to do everything to stay in the tournament, "Troost-Ekong told reporters Friday before the last 16 draws.
"It will be a tough match against Cameroon. We ended up facing them in the 2018 World Cup playoffs and they may well take their revenge, so we have to be ready for them.
Head-to-head
Nigeria won 11 of 22 games between African heavyweights, with eight draws and three wins for Cameroon.
This should be a tasty confrontation.
