Liverpool has pledged to prohibit any recognized supporter from throwing a flare outside during Victory 2-0 on Sunday against Chelsea.
The club also condemned an "offensive" song sung by its fans about the Stamford Bridge side.
Police in Merseyside are investigating the incident caused by a flare that resulted in the medical treatment of a nine-year-old boy.
"Liverpool Football Club would like to thank Chelsea players, staff, officials and supporters for their compbadionate mark for Hillsborough's birthday during this weekend's game," said a spokesman for the club.
"As always, the vast majority of those present at Anfield have ensured that the occasion is an appropriate tribute.
"Unfortunately, a smoke device was thrown into the visitors section in the second half and we are actively working with the Merseyside Police to investigate the case.
"Anyone found guilty of this offense will be banned from our soil.
"The club is also concerned about the inappropriate and offensive singing of some of our fans.
"We urge all Liverpool supporters to respect each other and to stop such singing because they do not reflect the inclusivity the club is defending.

Chelsea praised Liverpool's position. The Blues website said, "The Chelsea football club is extremely concerned that a flare was launched in the section of the stadium that houses our supporters during our match at Anfield on Sunday.
"We therefore welcome the Liverpool Football Club's statement on the subject and its commitment to work alongside the Merseyside Police to investigate.
"We also welcome Liverpool FC's recognition of the homophobic slogans of its local fans during the match and its commitment to rid this feeling of its stadium."
