Liverpool kept his title dreams alive with a spectacular late winner against Newcastle at St James's Park on Saturday.

The Northeast Magpies caught up with the Reds twice and Rafa Benitez's team seemed poised to end Liverpool's quest for the title with a well-deserved point.

Liverpool was without Roberto Firmino, injured, while the star, Mohamed Salah, was dismissed 15 minutes after a concussion.

Jurgen Klopp's men are often accused of not having the depth of their Manchester City rivals, but groups like Divock Origi, Xherdan Shaqiri and Daniel Sturridge all produced decisive moments in the season.

However, while Origi would take the place, the Reds saw Virgil van Dijk show his leadership qualities in goal preparation.

The Dutchman – who had already headed into a corner to open the scoring – told Trent Alexander-Arnold, right foot, to give Shaqiri his right-footed place.

Alexander-Arnold had already produced two badists so far in the match, but he listened to the order from above and Van Dijk was justified moments later when Origi nodded his head.

The win means Liverpool return to first place as Manchester City prepares to face Leicester City at Etihad on Monday night.

The Reds are powerless to stop City from retaining their crown if Pep Guardiola's team wins the remaining two games, but Liverpool has already racked up the most points of all the finalists.

The Reds host Barcelona Tuesday as they try to come back on a 3-0 defeat at Camp Nou.
