Liverpool have had scouts to watch Sardar Azmoun during the Russian Super Cup this weekend, according to reports.

Russia's Soviet Sport magazine said members of the Reds' watchdog were present as Zenit St. Petersburg from Azmoun faced Lokomotiv Moscow at Moscow's VTB Arena.

The defending champions, Zenit, were beaten 3-2, but Azmoun scored two goals on either side of the half.

The 24-year-old joined the company owned by Gazprom last February for around £ 10.5 million. He was approaching the transfer of his loan to Wolves in January, which failed on the day of maturity.

The Iranian international Azmoun, formerly known as "The Iranian Messi", has long been waiting for a transfer to Europe, Liverpool being known for its interest in the player since 2016.

And Soviet Sport says the scouts of Liverpool have left Russia with positive news about Azmoun's clash with Lokomotiv.

Former group leader Rubin Kazan had a positive season in his new home country with 14 goals and three badists in just 17 appearances in all competitions.

Azmoun insists that he refused the opportunity to join Jurgen Klopp in January 2017.

In an interview with the Qatar Supreme Committee's website for delivery and inheritance, he said: "There was talk of Liverpool who would have shown interest in me during the past winter transfer window.

"However, I did not think the time was propitious to move in. I would have ended up playing a few games, then spending a lot of time on the bench, Liverpool looking only to fill a gap during a game of his season.

"I want to evolve in a big club to evolve as a player, which is why I'm going to time the movement with great precision, I'm sure I'll be playing in a European club in the near future."

But it is unclear whether Liverpool will attempt to follow up on their apparent interest in Azmoun, given their as unobtrusive as before.
