Liverpool prepares for friendly match at Anfield as 2019/20 pre-season projects take shape

Liverpool will play a pre-season game at Anfield on the eve of the 2019/20 season.

ECHO understands that the Reds are in talks with a number of potential opponents for the game of the week in early August.

Jurgen Klopp's players completed their preparations for the current campaign the same way last summer when they welcomed Torino.

Liverpool is also in talks to play a lucrative friendly match at the new Tottenham stadium in late July.

This has prompted a mixed reaction from supporters, some fearing that a potential home game will be pulled out of Merseyside, but that is not the case.

The Anfield field will only be ready in early August, as it will host three pop concerts in June before the playground's redevelopment work begins.

However, ECHO understands that the Reds did not have to modify their pre-season plans following the events with Take That, Bon Jovi and Pink.

Anfield has not been used for pre-season games in July in recent years and Anfield officials are simply sticking to the format of a warm-up match elsewhere in the UK or Ireland.

Wembley and the Aviva stadium in Dublin have already been used, but this time they are not available. Liverpool being also unable to use the Cardiff Millennium Stadium, the new Tottenham residence appeared as an option, Napoli being probably behind the opposition.

If an agreement is reached, Klopp thinks it would help his players to become familiar with the new stadium before the Premier League season.

Liverpool's pre-season program will maintain the same format that was successful during Klopp's reign.

They will have a number of friendly matches in the Northwest early July before flying to America for an eight day tour.

The Reds will face Borussia Dortmund in Indiana (July 19), Seville in Boston (July 21) and Sporting Lisbon in New York (July 24).

Upon his return from the United States, Klopp will take his players to a weeklong training camp in Europe.

They will then have the game in London and one in Anfield, as well as being potentially involved in the Community Shield if they are crowned Premier League champions.
