Gary Neville think Liverpool looks "less moved than last season" and he would not be surprised if Liverpool and Manchester City lose points before the end of the season.

The Reds have gone from one goal to beat Southampton 3-1 at St Mary's on Friday night, once again, jumps on the city to rise to the top of the Premier League standings.

City has a game in hand but Neville believes that there will be many more twists before the end of the campaign on May 12 – although he insists that Liverpool is a completely different proposition than the team that faltered at the last hurdle of the 2013-14 season.

"It would not surprise me if City lost points in two games and Liverpool lost two," Neville told Sky Sports. "But I've never been so sure that Liverpool would win a match like I was tonight.

"It's an outstanding level of performance from both teams this season. We have excellent games to watch. Next Sunday, it's huge. Crystal Palace next Sunday is just as difficult for City. If City will win this match and the Liverpool players know that they have to win and win against Chelsea, the legs start to get a little heavier.

"If City loses points, Liverpool will bounce on this ground. We will be witnessing it until the end of the season.

"Liverpool is in a good time. They look less moved than last season as they played it. There was a level of desperation, a level of frenzy in the way they played [last season].

"They struggled in the first half of the match against Southampton. I think Southampton played very well, but then they took control of the game and control is important. Understanding is important, Mohamed Salah [who scored Liverpool’s second] was clinical in a crucial moment. He must be cold towards the end of the season.

"Liverpool is in a much better position than it was a few years ago, while he was trying to win the title because at that time it was a little more desperate, a little more frenzied. "
