The Dutchman was on the club's training ground, the Melwood, while a 16-man contingent in Liverpool started pre-season training.

Van den Berg joined the Reds last month in a PEC Zwolle pbad for an initial amount of £ 1.1m, which is expected to reach around £ 4.4m – he counts 350 first team appearances.

At just 17 years old, it was thought that the central defender would become a fixture for those under 18 and under 23 at the moment.

But after working with several members of the club's team, including Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, James Milner and Fabinho, Jurgen Klopp opened the door for Van den Berg to earn a spot on the senior team.

While the German coach has four central defenders: Virgil van Dijk, Matip, Gomez and Dejan Lovren, the teenage defender – who called it a "dream come true" to settle in Anfield and join "the biggest club in the world "- was told that it is up to him to determine what role he will play in 2019-20 through the pre-season.

Liverpool will play seven pre-season matches, starting with neighbors Tranmere Rovers next Thursday (7:30 pm), before facing Manchester City in the Community Shield on August 4 and opening his Premier League campaign against Norwich City five days later.

"He's a great talent, but a young boy and we already have a good team," Klopp told Liverpool's official website about Van den Berg.

"He took the challenge, he really wanted to be part of it and I'm really happy for him.

"We do autographs for the immediate or the future and it's always about boys, what they do with them.

"The first impression here was really good and I'm happy to have it with me."

Commenting on his first day in Merseyside, Van den Berg said, "That's great. When I came in, I was very nervous, but I talked to the players and the staff and I felt at home. It feels good.

"Everyone was really nice to me, they all said" hello "and helped me if I had any questions, so it's a really nice place.

"Jürgen came to see me when I came in, so I'm really excited."

On the first day of preparatory training, the Dutch youth international added: "It was difficult. The first day of the pre-season was a little easier, but that's good. Hard, but very good.

"I feel good, as I said, I already feel really at home here and it's very important to me.

"I'm just impatient; I am going to train hard and hope to play a few minutes here. "
