Champions League club Divock Origi have signed a new long-term contract, the club said on Wednesday.

"Divock Origi has pledged his future at the Liverpool Football Club by signing a new long-term contract at Melwood today," Liverpool said in a statement, without revealing details about the length of the deal.

The Belgian international is largely a peripheral figure at Anfield since its signing in Lille in 2014.

However, he scored two goals in a remarkable 4-0 win against Barcelona in the Champions League semifinal last season and in the second leg to make up for the 3-0 first-leg deficit.

Origi then scored again in the final victory over Tottenham as Liverpool won the competition for the sixth time.

"It's a story that only football can write," said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

"We wanted to sign it again, to extend the contract, and the good thing was that he wanted it too. He realized that it was a difficult time (but) we had never abandoned it at that time. Origi had entered the last 12 months of his previous contract and would have stalled on the offer of a new contract due to worries about playing time.

"I am very happy to be able to sign this contract and it gives you a boost at the beginning of the season, as well as at the end of the season last year," said Origi.

"When we had to make that decision, I just wanted to talk to the club and my entourage first, but I always felt that I wanted to stay and extend my contract." Origi has spent two of his five seasons as a Liverpool player. He was on loan from Lille and Wolfsburg and seemed destined to leave the club when he started last season behind Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Daniel Sturridge in the order of precedence for the start of the match.

However, his fortune changed when a mistake by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford gave him a win in the 96th minute of the Merseyside derby in December.

Origi then scored seven goals in total last season. He also won a crucial goal in Newcastle, while Liverpool narrowly missed Manchester City in an exciting Premier League run.
