Liverpool vs Huddersfield? Try Mohamed Salah against Sadio Mane in the race for Golden Boot – David Maddock

Against a team with only three wins all season, there has never been any question of how, always by how much.

In the end, it was not Liverpool against Huddersfield or even against the goal difference of Manchester City … but Salah versus Mane and the two against the history books.

In an evening that started with a record – the fastest goal ever recorded in the Premier League by the Reds, converted by Naby Keita after 15 seconds – the two strikers went into the battle to become the top scorer of the season. And it's a remarkable fight.

That brought the Egyptian to 21 goals in the Premier League for the season and the place ahead of his teammate in the fight for the Golden Shoe, the 20 Mane points ahead of Sergio Aguero and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

He also ensures he has scored more than 20 league goals in consecutive seasons – this is only the third time a Liverpool striker has hit him in the Premier League era. It's also an illustrious company, the others being Luis Suarez and Robbie Fowler.

While it's not great enough to have two strikers from a club playing for the Golden Shoe, Salah usually adds more luster by writing his most notable chapter in the legend Anfield.

This second-half strike allowed him to beat Sam Raybould (early 1900s) and legendary Roger Hunt to become the all-time leading scorer after 100 games for the club … with 69 goals.

Read it again, in case you missed it. Salah in less than two seasons scored 69 goals for the Reds. And yet, it is not good enough to be named in the PFA team of the year? Crazy.

In the end, as the dust fell on this battle between the two friends and colleagues for ages, it meant that Liverpool was returning to the top of the Premier League with a serious message to City.

Not only will they not go, but they will press them fiercely. It's the twenty-ninth time the back has changed hands at the peak of the season – another record – and now the pressure is firmly on the Manchester club to move to 30 at the weekend.

Not only that, but Liverpool has drastically reduced the difference in goal difference – and this could still be important.

That's how much he's become now in this epic title race. It's a question of goals, with Liverpool under Klopp with 300 goals scored since his arrival and 100 consecutive times, while City had 163. That's amazing.

Liverpool has certainly provided a lot against a Huddersfield team that has lost 22 of its last 24 games.

Keita started with 15 seconds – the second fastest time in Liverpool history, when he forced a mistake from Stankovic and then slipped on a return pbad from Salah to take home.

But his partner, Trent Alexander-Arnold, was not outdone when he raised his total to 11 for the entire halftime campaign with a deep ball that Salah converted into style.

After the break, the question was how many extra records and how many Liverpool could close the advantage of the goal difference of City. There are only three players left now, which creates more pressure, first thanks to Mane who brilliantly took over Jordan Henderson's colors.

Then, Salah scored 83 minutes late on another Robertson center to record his moment of legend. You wonder, however, whether an even more glorious chapter in history is about to be written. It's the best season in Liverpool history in terms of points per game. This album certainly deserves a title?
