Locals still harbor illegal miners – 50 people arrested in eastern and western areas

GNA – Vanguard Operation personnel apprehended about 50 alleged illegals
western and eastern regions in various operations during
last week.

The statement
said Saturday, July 13, the Vanguard operation personnel in the western region
apprehended 16 suspected illegal Chinese miners in the Enchi Kwahu area in
the Aowin District as well as five excavators that they use in their
operations.

He said the 34
other alleged illegal juveniles were arrested in the Akim East municipality in
Eastern region Friday.

The statement
stated that the suspects, which included locals and strangers, were
apprehended in Asiakwa.

"Nine of
the local suspects were handed over to the civilian police in Kibi for prosecution
while the others – 16 Chinese, 22 Guineans and three Burkinabés and the
five excavators were handed over to the Interministerial Committee on Illegal Activities
Mining for further action.

"Although
the working group received help from some locals,
others have also resorted to shelters for illegal minors.

"These
illegal miners rented housing in various areas where galamsey
is rampant and wreaks havoc on our water bodies and forests.

"Surgery
Vanguard therefore calls on traditional leaders and locals to
help to enlighten these unlicensed operators and their collaborators.

"In other
operations conducted from Vanguard's advanced operations base in the center
Region, a total of 94 Changfan water pumping machines were
destroyed, "the statement said.
