Attentive Marvel fans knew the Multiverse would be arriving in the MCU at some point in Phase 4 – they just weren’t sure exactly when or how. Could it be the courtesy of a grieving scarlet witch in WandaVision? An unintended result of the Blip? Some Spider-Versal baffles in No way home? It turned out that the arrival of the Multiverse was actually a work of mischief, courtesy of Loki (or, Lokis to be precise) in the Disney + series. Loki – with consequences that will ripple through the movies and beyond for quite a while to come.
In the Loki Finally, our antihero (and her female variant Sylvie) destroyed the forces controlling the Sacred Timeline, and major branches immediately sprang up: the birth of the Multiverse. As editor-in-chief Michael Waldron says Empire in a new epic Loki Season 1 breakdown feature, which has always been the (sorry) end of the series. “A good beacon for us as a creative team was, ‘At the end of this thing, we’re going to blow the lid off the Multiverse,’” he says. “And what better character to do that than Loki?” The character who originally brought the Avengers together is now directly responsible for this next phase of madness.
But the latest episode didn’t just set up the Multiverse – it also introduced new major villain Kang The Conqueror… or, at least, his more benevolent variation known as He Who Remains, the orchestrator behind it. all VAT. And while Kang is going to be a huge Marvel player going forward (including in the ongoing filming Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania), Waldron says there was no pressure from Marvel to get him on the show.
“It seemed like there was a real appetite for doing Kang, because Kang is a time-traveling multiversal villain, and we were doing a time-traveling multiversal adventure. Marvel was cool with that, and they were excited about it. “He explains.” What has really worked in our favor is that we’re in enough of a nascent phase of these MCU shows that audiences don’t know they’re presenting a Big Bad like this- This in the finale of a TV show, so we were really excited to drop that bomb ten minutes into the finale and let everyone be like, “Holy shit!”
