Loki’s Michael Waldron reveals his original plans for enchanting Sylvie on Hunter C-20, including a laser armadillo attack.

Loki Head writer Michael Waldron has revealed his plans for a bizarre deleted scene starring Sylvie, Hunter C-20, and a laser-firing armadillo. Loki has turned out to be one of Marvel’s weirdest and most wonderful projects to date, destroying the so-called sacred timeline and officially bringing the Multiverse into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Marvel / Disney + series with Tom Hiddleston as the titular god of mischief directly follows the fallout from Avengers: Endgame, as a variant of Loki escapes with the Tesseract and is captured by the Time Variance Authority (TVA).

Episode 2 of Loki, “The Variant,” introduced Sophia Di Martino as Sylvie, a dangerous female variant of Loki who is determined to take revenge on the Timekeepers, the creators of television and the Holy Timeline. Sylvie has wreaked havoc across the timelines, hiding in apocalypses and ultimately capturing Agent TVA Hunter C-20 (Sasha Lane). The opening scene of Episode 3, “Lamentis,” fully showcased Sylvie’s powers of enchantment in action. She coaxed the location of the timekeepers outside of C-20 by recreating one of C-20’s memories of a bar on Earth and established herself as a friend and confidante of C-20.

Now, Waldron has revealed his original plans for the opening scene of “Lamentis,” which took full advantage of the fact that the sequence was an elaborate illusion. Speaking as a guest on The Ringer-Verse podcast (via The Direct), Waldron described a version of Sylvie’s enchantment where TVA placed defenses in C-20’s mind, leading to a “kind of fight sequence” where bar patrons attacked the variant. the Loki the writer and executive producer went on to say that the deleted scene had “more and more crazy” climbing to the point where it was a “armadillo with a laser mounted on it” that Sylvie had to fight. Read his full quote below:

“Once upon a time, the opening of episode 3 when Sylvie was trying to infiltrate the mind of Hunter C-20, it actually turned into a kind of fight sequence where the TVA had set up. defenses. So there are people in my memory, so the beach bar actually turned on Sylvie and attacked her, and it just got crazier and crazier. There were like little children attacking him. Then at one point I literally wrote that an armadillo with a laser mounted on it comes to the beach bar and shoots and Sylvie hits it like a soccer ball in the ocean. It was in a script. “

Waldron also opened up on why the scene was toned down, referring to a comment from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige that the armadillo was one step too far – “Kevin often refers to this to me, like, ‘This might be the bar too expensive. “” Since the Alligator Loki variant seen in Episode 5 was so popular with fans, surely there is another timeline where a laser armadillo is just as successful. Waldron clearly wanted to take full advantage of Sylvie’s illusion, and the absurd nature of the now-deleted scene aligns with Lokiis generally a quirky vibe.

On the other hand, toning down the final version of the scene was arguably the right choice, as gradually revealing the illusion gives the overture to “Lamentis” a much more sinister tone. The scene provided one of the first major clues that TVA isn’t all it seems, revealing that C-20 and many other TVA agents are in fact variants with their memories erased. As fun as the deleted scene may seem, keep the Loki low-key scene ended up making it much more efficient.
