The London authorities have launched what they describe as "the most stringent standard in the world for vehicle emissions".
Introduced on Monday, the Very Low Emission Area (ULEZ) will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in central London.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan described the ULEZ introduction as "a milestone for our city".
"Our toxic air is an invisible killer responsible for one of the greatest health emergencies of our generation nationally," he added.
ULEZ is built around what is called "European standards". A framework introduced in 1992, the standards encompbad emissions controls that set limits for nitrogen oxides and engine particles of a vehicle.
