TUbe pbadengers will have access to the 4G network anywhere in the London Underground by the mid-2020s, revealed Transport for London (TfL).
The Jubilee line will be the first to benefit, with half being from the United States featuring complete mobile connectivity on platforms and tunnels starting in March of next year, the network announced. Friday.
The test section will extend from Westminster to Canning Town – excluding London Bridge and Waterloo stations – and will also cover ticketing rooms and hallways.
The London Bridge and Waterloo stations are expected to become fully compatible with 4G by 2020, subject to final approval, TfL said.
There are already 260 Wi-Fi stations on the London Underground and TfL rail services.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: "This is a very important step for the millions of people who use the Tube each year.
"The introduction of 4G and, in the future, 5G will help Londoners and visitors stay in touch and get the latest travel information while on the move.
"London is the best place to live, visit and work – and projects like this one will help to improve it even further."
Shashi Verma, chief technology officer at TfL, said: "The London Underground network is an extremely challenging environment for technological improvements, but we are now on the road to providing mobile connectivity in our stations and tunnels.
"We have started this complex work to allow our customers to receive telephone reception in our tunnels starting in March 2020, and more stations and lines will be online in the next few years."
The entire project is expected to require 2,000 kilometers of cables, engineers working as a night shift to minimize disruption to pbadengers.
