Long Covid cases double in second wave

HYDERABAD: The percentage of long cases of Covid-19 is 20 to 30% in the second wave while it was 10 to 15% in the first wave, according to the first data collected from private hospitals in Hyderabad. The burden of long Covid has been on the lungs, heart, brain and intestine.

It has been noticed that 40 percent of patients develop a persistent cough and have difficulty breathing and develop pulmonary fibrosis.

Long-term consequences are noted in those who have suffered severe symptoms, long-lasting, persistent illness requiring hospitalization, and have undergone critical care.

In 10 percent of the cases, the disease was found to be very mild and recovery from Covid-19 was rapid but there were symptoms of long Covid after a month.

In five percent of the cases of those who had no initial symptoms, the long Covid was found to manifest itself after a month making them realize that they had already suffered from it. These are very few cases, but they were noted as they came back with bowel problems, heart problems, or persistent shortness of breath.

In severe cases of Covid-19, it was found that after six to eight weeks, patients reported problems with the heart, brain fog and lungs.

Dr Shyamala Iyengar, senior consultant in internal medicine at Apollo Hospitals, says: “We are learning that the problems of the cardiovascular and neurological systems are severe chest pain, chronic fatigue, dyspnea and also scarring in parts of the heart which results in myocardial damage. . It was noted that 60 to 80 percent of severe cases reported symptoms after 50 days of diagnosis. “In people with pre-existing heart conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol, there has been a severity of long Covid.

Dr Venkat Ramesh, Senior Infectious Disease Consultant, explained: “The intestinal flora is altered due to the virus and the subsequent treatment process. In some patients we have noticed recurrent diarrhea, vomiting, loss of appetite and weight loss. patients because they cannot eat. These patients should be put on probiotics.

Neurological symptoms in terms of delirium, brain fog, mood swings, and sleep disturbances have also been documented. Experts say they are still learning about the different types of long Covid.

The Telangana State Medical Council, along with the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology, is compiling data on the longest Covid in the state. This is done to understand the impact and also the challenges healthcare workers have faced in identifying the long Covid. People who have suffered after recovery are also unable to understand what is wrong with them yet.

Many patients are confused because they do not want to go to the hospital or undergo treatment again. But they need medicine and care, which puts a financial burden on many of them.
