When Lorde released “Stoned at the Nail Salon”, the second single from her upcoming album Solar energy, some fans noted that the ballad sounded a lot like “Wild at Heart,” a song from Lana Del Rey’s 2021 album. Lorde and Del Rey both worked with super-producer Jack Antonoff on the songs, and fans were getting a broader review of Antonoff’s work: the problem only got worse as his profile grew. Now speaking with New York Times, Lorde defends his work with Antonoff. “I didn’t do a Jack Antonoff record,” Lorde said. “I did a Lorde record and he helped me do it and gave me a lot of production and arrangement. While not specifically for “Stoned at the Nail Salon,” Lorde – who is also a producer on Solar energy, released August 20 – went on to recognize the touches of Antonoff’s production that can appear across the range of musicians he works with, from Taylor Swift to St. Vincent. “Some of those things that I really like and some that I don’t like,” she said. “And I beat them for the work we do together.” Lorde, who started working with Antonoff on his 2017 album Melodrama (which she also co-produced), attributed the couple’s close relationship to how well they are able to work together while also fighting back “sexist” speculations from fans that the couple are dating. “No one doing a job that is not my job has a relationship like the one I have with Jack,” she added. “He’s like a partner to me. We are a couple. It’s not a romantic relationship, but we’ve been in it for seven years, and it’s a really unique thing, so I don’t blame people for not being able to figure it out.
