Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt was invited to join Manchester City by former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal.
The Dutchman will probably leave the Eredivisie champions this summer with a host of top clubs vying for his signature.
Van Gaal, coach of Ajax between 1991 and 1997 and head of the 1995 Champions League, supported Ligt in the role of Pep Guardiola, despite the interest in Manchester United.
Louis van Gaal think Matthijs de Ligt would prosper under Pep Guardiola in Manchester City
"I think De Ligt fits Manchester City perfectly," said FOX Sports, the former boss of Ajax. "Vincent Kompany has already left and Nicolas Otamendi is not good enough. Then I would like to see him next to Aymeric Laporte.
Van Gaal nodded, adding, "I think exactly the same thing. Although De Ligt can go to Barcelona too, because I do not like their central defenders either.
"He could play in Barcelona, but he could also play for Manchester City, and in that case, I would choose Pep Guardiola rather than Lionel Messi."
