PARIS (Reuters) – EDF could cut power generation at its 3,000 megawatt Chooz nuclear reactor in northern France because of the low flow of the Meuse, used to cool the two reactors at the plant.
"Due to the flow forecasts of the Meuse, production restrictions will probably affect EDF's nuclear power plants on Chooz production units as of Thursday, August 8," the group said.
EDF's use of river water as a coolant is regulated by law to protect plant and animal life. It is obliged to reduce the flow during hot weather when the water temperature increases or when the level of the river is low.
The utility was forced to cut production and shut down several reactors this summer due to two heat waves and prolonged dry weather that reduced river levels.
