"Lower inventory of horses" will make Del Mar's five-day "challenge" for racing office – Horse Racing News

The closing of the entries and the draw of the posts for the Friday card at Del Mar were still in a few hours on Tuesday morning as Racing Executive Vice President Tom Robbins went through the first two programs of the meeting.

"We are satisfied with the first two days, given the low stock of horses in California this year and other circumstances," Robbins said. "We are doing our best to organize the best races possible five days a week, but we know it will be a challenge."

The opening program of Wednesday's 10 races attracted 81 participants and eight horses were also eligible. Thursday, the program of seven races has 59 entries and two other eligible.

The Santa Anita and Los Alamitos meetings ahead of Del Mar have both canceled race days, which Robbins and race secretary David Jerkens hope to avoid by reducing the number of races. The goal is to organize 40 races per week, compared to an average of 43 per week in 2018.

The Jerkens mantra, since he took office as a race secretary five years ago, was "one day at a time".

To what Robbins, in his 39th year at Del Mar, adds an "Amen".

"It's very true this year," Robbins said.
