If you had asked Real Madrid fans to choose the strongest formation of their team at the start of the season, Lucas Vazquez would not have been much chosen.
But the Spanish winger became the first choice under Santiago Solari and completed a good series of matches with a start in the Clasico against Barcelona at Camp Nou on Wednesday and a goal in the famous match.
After the match, Solari said: "Lucas has two qualities that I admire most in the Spanish character: solidarity and bravery."
It was quite the compliment. But this is perhaps not surprising: Solari spoke in laudatory terms of Karim Benzema and the generosity of the attacking French attacker. Lucas is also generous, in a different way: with his rhythm of work and his fight.
Part of the reason why Benzema and Vinicius Junior have been able to excel for Real recently is due to Lucas' unremitting efforts on the right. On Wednesday, he was rewarded with the combination of his two teammates to prepare for the first goal of Clasico.
Solari sees himself in Galician. During its stay in Madrid, Argentina has moved somewhat away from the "Zidanes and Pavones" policy, which aimed to mix superstar signatures with young players from the youth system.

In 2003, Argentina stated: "It is a difficult policy to apply; because you are eliminating the middle clbad, the supporting fabric of the teams participating in three competitions a year. "
Solari was part of the "middle clbad" just like Lucas at the moment. And even if the Galician is less spectacular than some of his teammates, his fight and his commitment can not be questioned.
His goal at Clasico was his 21st as a Madrid player and when he scored, Real never lost.
He was also first in the penalty shootout against Atletico in Milan during the 2015-16 Champions League final, giving his teammates confidence kick.
He spends most of his time at Real. Until now. With Solari, the team comes first and Lucas is clearly a central part of Argentina's approach.
It can also help explain Isco's situation. The midfielder was blocked by his coach and the debate made headlines in the first few weeks of Argentina.
Solari has never really explained himself with words, but his actions prove at the very least that he prefers others. And that makes sense now. An exceptional footballer, Isco is often accused of slowing Madrid's attacks or playing in the rostrum.

Isco sent a tweet on Thursday in which he claimed that he was working hard but that he did not enjoy the same opportunities as the others.
But Solari, questioned about this during the pre-match press conference that preceded the Madrid derby against Atletico, simply sighed and said, "Well …"
Later, he clarified by answering another question. "A professional footballer has to be 100% trained to serve the team," he said.
If a sentence seemed to sum up how Lucas is essential for the 42 year old player and that Isco is ignored, that's it.
The Galician won his place in this team thanks to a selfless effort. Solidarity and bravery, as Solari calls it. The Andalusian, meanwhile, seems to be nearing the end at Real. And now that the results are on the rise, it's no longer such a big problem.
