Millions of pounds of luxury sports cars sank off the French coast after the sinking of an Italian freighter.

Great America caught fire and sank with 27 people on board who all managed to escape and were saved by the British Navy.

But the fate of 37 Porsche – worth £ 8.1m – was only revealed when car owners learned that their vehicles were not on their way.

The 37 Porsche 911 GT2 RS, worth more than £ 220,000 each, were among the 2,000 cars on board, including the Audi A3, A5, Q7, RS4 and RS5 for Brazilian customers.

In a letter to customers and published by Carscoops, the automotive information website, the German manufacturer revealed the accident.

The huge cargo ship of the Grimaldi group caught fire and sank off the French coast

"We are sorry to inform you that, as a result of a fire, a Grimaldi Group vessel carrying your vehicle sank on March 12, 2019.

"And for this reason, your GT2 RS can not be delivered."

The letters were a kick for buyers who had bought cars only knowing that Porsche had put the GT2 RS out of production.

There were at least 2,000 cars on board

But, with their misfortune, good news for enthusiasts of the car: the company has just revealed that it would resume the manufacture of the model.

The GT2 RS remains the most powerful 911 model of all time and can reach 0 to 60 in 2.7 seconds with a top speed of 211 mph.
