Lyft's shared bike business has a difficult Sunday.
Almost identical blog posts from Citi Bike, Ford GoBike and Capital Bikeshare, all owned by Lyft, confirm that their pedal-badist electric bicycles have been temporarily decommissioned. That means customers in New York, San Francisco and Washington, DC will have to deal with pedal bikes for the moment.
The problem stems from a problem with the brakes of these pedal-badisted bikes. "We recently received a small number of reports from riders who experienced stronger braking force than expected on the front wheel," notes each of the posts.
This is a security problem. A front brake that is too strong could tip the rider forward. So, "for the sake of caution", each of the bikeshare companies will withdraw their pedaling badistance options until the problem is solved.
Two of the updates indicate that a new electric bike accessible by scanning a QR code is being developed. The Ford GoBike Note further indicates that "some of the electric bikes in San Jose have different components and will remain in use", suggesting that the problem is specific to a certain bike model.
It is unclear when the option of the electric bike will come back in these three places, or if other markets are affected by the problem.
