The winner: Glbad
While the January release schedule is traditionally dominated by rewards, not everyone wants to gorge on high-profile dramas for a month. Thus, Glbad, the new film by M Night Shyamalan, extends the story of his previous films Unbreakable (2000) and Split (2017). Bringing together the actors of these two titles – notably James McAvoy, Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson – seemed to be a strategy to give the director his greatest success for more than ten years.
So far, Glbad seems willing to do that, with UK starts of £ 3.33m (£ 3.42m, including previews). This compares to £ 2.56m for Split exactly two years ago. Unbreakable debuted the last weekend of 2000 with just over 2 million pounds. In the United States, Glbad started with just over $ 40 million, the British equivalent rising to 4 million pounds. Split also opened in the United States with $ 40 million, and the UK starts were lower than the equivalent figure.
Split has become a word of mouth in the UK, reaching £ 11.4 million. It is not certain that Glbad will make the equivalent of this total: it will depend on the reaction of the enlarged audience when the initial fan base is exhausted.
The finalist: Mary Queen of Scots
Another week and another reward for the competitors in the cinemas – this time from the British production company Working Title. Mary Queen of Scots, renowned theater actress Josie Rourke, debuts on the big screen with a remarkable cast led by Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie, both nominated for Best Actress Oscar last year, respectively for Lady Bird and me, Tonya – Lose to Frances McDormand.
Mary Queen of Scots opened solidly with £ 2.08m, including negligible previews, in 499 theaters. It's a little worse than the debut of award-winning favorites, The Favorite and Stan & Ollie. The most relevant comparisons are those of Elizabeth and her retinue, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, who achieved lifetime cumulative totals of £ 5.54m and £ 5.22m, respectively. Mary Queen of Scots should easily pbad these numbers even though ticket prices are higher.
The strong hold: Stan & Ollie
The eOne distributor should be pleased with Stan & Ollie's performance for the second weekend, down only 26% from its opening session. The total after 10 days is a solid sum of £ 6.1m. The comedy drama biographique will probably be one of the contenders of this season most attractive, at least in the United Kingdom, where it takes place.
The Favorite, which climbed 9% on its second weekend, now plummets by 44% in its third session. Nevertheless, 20th Century Fox will be delighted with the total amount it has accumulated so far, of £ 11.1 million, and the edgy costumed drama should be supported by its dominant position in the price race.
The brave alternative: Beautiful Boy
Independent cinemas are full of movies with Mary Queen of Scots, Stan & Ollie and The Favorite, as well as Colette. StudioCbad has therefore made the wise decision not to push too far with its own competitor, Beautiful Boy, the true story of a young man's addiction has affected his family. Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet stars.
Beautiful Boy opened with a respectable $ 252,000 in 124 theaters, giving a site average slightly over £ 2,000. Including the previews, the total is £ 361,000 – but that was not enough to win a place in the UK Top 10.
The market
Despite the arrival of Glbad and Mary Queen of Scots and strong figures from Stan & Ollie, Mary Poppins Returns and The Favorite, total box office revenue is down 30% from the previous year. equivalent weekend a year ago. This session was directed by Coco, while this year's big animations (How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and Lego Movie 2: The Second Part) only arrive in February.
But that's not the whole story. A year ago, Darkest Hour performed better than any other contender for prizes, while The Greatest Showman and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle also contributed steadily to the pot. We are currently missing equivalents.
Beginning this Friday, the family film A Dog's Way Home, Jennifer Lopez's second comedy, Clint Eastwood in The Mule, and rewarding the Vice and Destroyer candidates, are all the stars of the game. However, it will be a surprise if this harvest of new titles can save the situation for January. Expect the month to end in 2018.
