Marks and Spencer have launched a discount for customers who bring their own lunch box to stores.
The new system will encourage customers to bring their own reusable containers to M & S Market Place by offering a 25pc discount on each meal.
Customers can fill their reusable containers with a variety of options for hot and cold lunches, including roast chicken and freshly made salads.
M & S is the first of the major retailers to introduce the program, which is being launched today, as part of their plan to reduce single-use plastics.
M & S's Market Place is available in 23 popular downtown stores, including London Pantheon, Oxford Street, Newcastle, Norwich and Manchester.
Every week, nearly 70,000 city-dwellers pick up their lunch at Market Place, while a new study by IGD revealed that the take-out food sector would grow 26.4% from here. 2024.
The retailer hopes that the discount, which will be effective as of today, will encourage a change in consumer behavior and reduce the use of disposable items on Main Street.
M & S is already offering a 25 pence incentive for hot beverages served in reusable coffee cups – an initiative launched in April 2018.
Last month, the Telegraph launched a zero-waste campaign inviting the government, local councils and private companies to do more to increase recycling rates in the country.
