The Ashanti regional branch of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) says it is impressed with the massive participation in immunization in two of the region’s districts, Kwadaso and Kumasi Metro, where the exercise began with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Deputy Regional Director Dr Michael Rockson Adeii in an interview on Eyewitness News said many residents were eager to receive the vaccine as they started lining up at vaccination centers very early on Friday, August 13, 2021.
“The turnout was impressive, even though all four districts couldn’t get started. People were lining up in the morning to get vaccinated, ”he said.
Management plans to vaccinate some 50,000 people in this Johnson & Johnson round of inoculation in four districts; Kwadaso, Kumasi, Oforikrom and Asokwa metro.
The four districts were selected because they are hot spots of the virus in the region.
According to Dr Adjei, the two districts that were unable to start the processes on Friday; Oforikrom and Asokwa will do so by Sunday, citing challenges with training operational staff for the delayed start in those areas.
“Two neighborhoods started today, the Kwadaso and Kumasi metro. The two others ; Oforikrom and Asokwa will hopefully start tomorrow or Sunday. All districts have received the vaccine, but this comes with training. We only finished training the trainers yesterday [Thursday] they therefore need to train operational staff and this is what has delayed the process in both districts, ”he noted.
Dr Adjei said there were cases where people who had taken the AstraZeneca vaccine had attempted to obtain the Johnson & Johnson vaccine but “the system we have is capable of sifting them through” and these people were therefore asked to go back and wait for their second dose of AstraZeneca.
He expressed optimism that the cooperation of residents of the 20 vaccination centers will ensure the success of the process.
He further advised residents to ensure strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols to ensure the infection rate is reduced.
