Former President John Dramani Mahama urged members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to preserve the legacy of former President Jerry John Rawlings.
He said that the NDC, as a party born out of the events of the December 31 revolution, had a duty to uphold the principles of probity and accountability of former President Rawlings, as part of their national life and their daily practice.
Mahama made the appeal Thursday in Accra during the celebration of the 39th anniversary of the December 31 revolution on the theme “Supporting the gains of the December 31 revolution: the legacy of former President Rawlings”.

The ceremony was attended by senior NDC officials such as Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and Mr. Edward Doe Adjaho, former Speaker of Parliament.
Mr Mahama said the flame lit by the former president in 1981, which continued to burn for 39 years, would burn forever.
“The revolution was not perfect, because we know that every human event is never perfect. Like any human being, our founder, leader of the Revolution, President Rawlings, was not perfect, ”he said.
“But the sum of what he has done on earth, especially since he was 33 when he burst onto the political scene in Ghana and the sum of the events of the December 31 Revolution represent a sort of expiation for the evils of the past.
He said that the revolution thus bequeathed to the Ghanaians the principle of the accountability of those in charge of public responsibility, since sovereignty belongs to the people.
He noted that the revolution also left Ghanaians with a growing economy which has ensured the stability of our country’s progress over the years; and that too, more importantly, to bequeath to the Ghanaians a constitution which was drawn up by the ordinary people of this country.
He said it was because of the drafting of the constitution by ordinary Ghanaians such as butchers, dressmakers, mechanics, teachers, farmers and fishermen; which made the supreme law of the land the most enduring constitution in Ghanaian history.
He said the former president during his lifetime said he did not want monuments and statues erected in his honor, but rather wanted to be remembered in the hearts of men .
“And I believe the only vehicle; it is the vehicle of the political party that he founded, that is to say the NDC, that will be remembered in the hearts of men. This is the reason why we must get involved in the cause of the NDC Party, ”he said.
“I know that like any human institution, we could have our disagreement, but let us have and put at the center of our concerns to all that the protection of the revolutionary origins of our Party and the heritage of our founder is the main objective that we want. all achieve.
“I dare say no one can fill Jerry Rawlings’ shoes. No one can sum up the charisma, political spirit and courage shown by our late founder.
“And therefore, I urge that we re-engage on this 39th anniversary, that we will all work together and that even when we have differences of opinion, we will resolve them in a way that does not endanger the future of our Party, ”said Mr. Dit Mahama.
Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo said that the NDC was not a Party that burned the markets, but rather the Party that had built most of the markets across the country.
He noted that the Party would declare a three-day fast and prayers to support its legal team, which was processing their petition for the presidential election in the Supreme Court.
