Former President John Dramani Mahama
The Democratic National Congress (NDC), presidential candidate for the 2020 general election, former President John Dramani Mahama, applauded the party’s representatives in Parliament for winning the presidency after a hotly contested election to the House of Parliament on January 7.
Mr Mahama said their show of unity was determined and contributed to their victory on the morning of January 7.
“That’s what unity of purpose can do. They say we are divided, we are falling and that there is no force that can defeat a people who are together, who are united and who have only one goal, ”said Mr. Mahama.
The former president made the remarks when he welcomed the 137 NDC MPs and some party leaders to a lunch last Friday in Accra.
Mr Mahama said MPs have a job to do and “this is what we saw in Parliament that night. It was not a fight for you. It was not a fight for the NDC but it was a fight to protect the democracy of the Ghanaian people ”.
The democracy
Mr. Mahama noted that the chaotic manner in which the election of the Speaker of Parliament was conducted testified to the weakness of democracy in the country.
He said the snatching of ballots and the invasion of the House of Parliament by armed military had turned the country into a “banana republic.”
“It makes us look like a banana republic. Because you were there and you were emotionally charged, I am sure that the infamy of this event did not strike you, but when you come back on television you will see how our democracy has sunk ”, Mr. Mahama said.
Appreciation
For her part, NDC vice-presidential candidate for the 2020 election, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, thanked party members and the MP for fighting gallantly to win the presidency of parliament.
She assured party supporters that her leadership would not disappoint them but would prefer to keep its promises to the people even though the party is currently in a difficult situation.
“Let me specifically thank our constituents, those who trusted us and those who know we will deliver. I know we won’t betray their trust but just to let them know we will deliver wherever we are no matter what lies ahead you all fought a good fight and the fight wasn’t just by you – same but by your family, by your friends, by the voters and the sympathizers even on the other side, but I will not be complete if I do not distinguish, with all my apologies, the women parliamentarians ”, he said. she declared.
No authorization
Meanwhile, the head of the NDC caucus in Parliament, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, revealed at lunch that the decision of the 137 NDC MPs to vote for the Speaker of Parliament, the Right Hon. Alban Bagbin, was collectively taken away with the party leadership long before the night of the vote.
“The decision was taken collectively in this room to vote Mr. Alban Bagbin. God stood with the party and God stood with HE John Dramani Mahama, ”he said.
Mr Iddrisu said NDC MP for Asewase constituency Mr. Mubarack Muntaka, who was seen on live TV physically protecting the voting process and later seen ransacking NPP MP for Tema West after the ballots later snatched during the counting process did not have her permission. .
