Former President John Dramani Mahama held a Thanksgiving Day to celebrate his victory as the elected flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

John Mahama will lead the party to challenge the new Patriotic Party (NPP) and other political parties in the 2020 general election, after party members have chosen more than six others.

The NDC held its presidential primary in the 275 constituencies on Saturday, February 23, 2019.

The certified results of the Electoral Commission showed that John Mahama obtained 213,487 votes, representing 95.23% of the total valid votes, the other six candidates having about 4%.

Mahama, in a victory speech, said that he was deeply touched by the overwhelming approval he had received from members of the NDC base.

According to him, his election was a "call to duty and to action".

"Our party has spoken with one voice and I must say that we are all winners."
