Dr Arko Akoto-Ampaw, medical director of Eastern Regional Hospital, along with some of the Ghanaian politicians, reiterated that the clarification given by former President Mahama for his “do or die” comment is sufficient to end the controversies surrounding it. .
Dr Akoto-Ampaw made this claim on Accra-based JoyNews because he thinks the explanation given by Mr Mahama is very clear.
“The clarity of someone wanting to say something is in their head. I mean, I can’t explain what someone means better than what they intended to say.
“It was very clear that this make or die comment was an idiomatic expression. And to me, it’s clear in my mind and I understand what an idiomatic expression is. I understand what he meant by “do or die,” he told JoyNews.
John Dramani Mahama, on September 7, during his “Thank You” tour, declared his skepticism about the 2020 general election results that the NDC had clearly been robbed but had not fought for peace.
“We were clearly robbed, but we accepted the verdict in the name of peace,” Mahama said.
“But I want to make it clear here that the next elections would be won or lost at the polling station. So, at the polling station, it will be “do or die”. I am not saying “all die to die”. I’m saying it will be ‘do or die’ because the right thing has to be done, ”he told Techiman-based Akina FM.
However, the comment made by the former president was received with much criticism from a cross section of the Ghanaian public and in particular from NPP politicians who called for a withdrawal of the declaration.
Dr Arko Akoto-Ampaw speaking on ‘Newsfile’ urged critics to give Mahama a break after his explanation was clear.
“Why wouldn’t elite politicians understand this? This is because it is about seeking political capital for the purpose they desire. And in doing so, the opposition party (NPP) will try to seek that capital because that is what happens all the time in the country. “
