DCOP Patrick Adusei Sarpong, Regional Commander of Accra
The Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP, Patrick Adusei Sarpong, attributed the lack of trust of political parties in the Ghana Police Service to the loss of influence when they are out of power.
For him, it becomes virtually impossible for opposition parties to trust the security services, fearing that the government in power will use its authority to act against them.
DCOP Sarpong, at the request of the Justice Commission Emile Short, if he subscribes to claims that the opposition parties do not trust the police;
"That's right, when they [opposition parties] are in government, they trust us [police] but when they are not in government, they do not trust us. The fact is that when they are in government, they have an influence of the police. so when they are not in power, they are frightened and apprehended because the powers they used when they were in power will be used against them. They are afraid of their own shadows. "
Political infiltration hindering security services
DCOP Sarpong said the only way to end this worrying situation was for political actors to allow security agencies to fulfill their mandate with the freedom they deserve.
He insisted that politicians must separate their activities from those of the security working group.
"Politicians should do politics and allow security men to do security work. I do not know how it will be possible and feasible. But if politicians turn away from security and allow security guards to do their job unhindered, I think it will continue. "
Ayawaso violence: East Legon commander not dismissed – regional commander
DCOP Patrick Adusei Sarpong also denied the claims of the East Legon District Police Commander that he would have been excluded from the security measures taken for the partial election of Ayawaso West Wuogon, while this election had taken place in his jurisdiction.
East Legon police commander, DSP George Lysander Asare, told the investigating commission of Justice Emile Short Monday that he had been excluded from electoral security operations.
He added that he had instead been asked to bring his van back to the regional command.
But; DCOP Patrick Adusei Sarpong said the claims are false.
He said the DSP George Lysander Asare was the first on the list of people selected to be part of the election working group, but that no polling station had been badigned to him.
He added that he had sent messages to all district commanders via WhatsApp. [the day before the election] Patrick DC Adusei Sarpong, DCOP, did not respond to his message, but he was supposed to be part of the patrol team.
"This is not true [that we sidelined him]… when the elections took place and that he reported the [shooting] incident to me, I told him to take care of the situation because it falls under his command.
